If you are that unhappy then you should get divorced. You should not compare yourself to your grandparents. In 1900, the average person married around age 20 and died before age 50. "Death do us part" was a 30 year "life sentence." If you marry at age 30 and live to 80 then you do a fifty year sentence. It is much better to marry more than once than to stick it out with someone that you no longer love or respect.

Why did men marry? It is because we wanted to be certain that the children that we were raising were probably ours. In this age of DNA testing, this is no longer at issue. If you want a child, then marriage is not necessary. The courts will compel you to provide child support anyway.

What is the answer? Serial monogamy. Marriages should come with an expiration date with an option to renew similar to a military service commitment. Five years seems about right to me. If all is well, then you can "reenlist" for another five years. As with military service, both parties would have to be in agreement. This analogy also extends to children. Two married service people have to have a care plan for their children documented in advance in case one or both are called for duty.

This would solve a lot of problems. Each party enters the marriage with their own assets. Anything earned during the five years is divided equally at the end. Child care is addressed by a parenting plan.

Would I remarry my current wife of 17 years? I would probably have renewed until now. I am not certain that I would renew at the 20 year mark. My wife stopped working when our child was born. She does nothing but complain about how difficult her life is and how I am not helpful. I find this amusing as I work one full time and two part time jobs.

Let us change the law. The time has come for renewable marriage contracts.
